Practising Art Appreciation and Criticism

Core concept

A common framework for art criticism has four steps: description (what do you literally see — colours, shapes, subject), analysis (how are elements like colour, line and composition used), interpretation (what feeling or meaning does the artwork convey), and judgement (is it successful, and why).

How it works

Learning to appreciate art this way helps us engage more deeply with any artwork, even styles we may not immediately like, by understanding the artist's choices and intentions.
