ICSEClass 6 (ICSE)ScienceCh 14 · Topic 1
The Leaf
Leaves are important plant parts that carry out photosynthesis, making food for the plant using sunlight, water, and carbon dioxide.
Core concept
A leaf has a broad, flat blade to capture sunlight, and veins that transport water and nutrients throughout the leaf.
How it works
The green colour of leaves comes from chlorophyll, a pigment that absorbs sunlight for photosynthesis.
Why it matters
Tiny pores called stomata, usually on the underside of leaves, allow gases like carbon dioxide and oxygen to pass in and out.
Key detail
Leaves come in different shapes and sizes, each adapted to the plant's environment and specific needs.
